FATAL ROBBERY - One man dead; three men charged

Three men are remanded to her Majesty’s Prisons on charges of murder and armed robbery following a fatal shooting incident in Marigot St. John last Friday that left a 59 year-old man dead.
Remanded are 26 year-old Che Phillip of Grand Anse Valley St George, Kenny Morain Braveboy 34, of Beasejour and Albert Griffith of Grenville Vale St. George.
All three appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Tamara Gill on Tuesday at the Gouyave Magistrate’s Court to answer charges that have the propensity to place them behind bars for the rest of their natural lives.
According to information reaching the Grenada Informer, all three were arrested within three days of the Marigot shooting which leaves Anthony Audley Frederick dead from a gun shot wound to the chest.

BLOCK-O-RAMA ENDS WITH  MURDER - Two receive multiple injuries; one dies

Family members and villagers in New Hampshire, St. George’s are now mourning the senseless killing of thirty year old Ian Whiteman, who was his mother’s first-born son and second  of ten (10) children.
Ian lost his life in the early hours last Friday  when his brother Nelon Davidson and the shopkeeper Eugene Bartholomew, ,better know as ‘Scabby’ also of New Hampshiregot into an altercation which left  Nelon with chop wounds on the chest and under the arm and  the shopkeeper  with a stab wounds. Grenada Informer visited the grieving family of Ian and Nelon and was able to speak to two of the victim’s brothers who told us what they understood took place at the shop where a ‘Block-o-rama’ was in progress,  at the time of the incident.

EDITORIAL - Well organized, well executed

There are certain things which make good sense and there are some things which are just foolish. This is the height of the athletics season and, at the Sports Meet of the Secondary Schools and INTERCOL, programmes are offered to patrons and fans for purchase. These programmes are so laid out such that the fans can write in the results. Yet, for most of the time, the announcers on duty do not announce the results. For most of the time when they do, these results are called so quickly that fans cannot even keep up with the pace and hence cannot write. The purpose of the programme, therefore, is defeated and hence it does not worth the while purchasing one.
Not so with the oldest, most populous, prestigious and most disciplined all-female Secondary School in the country. Like all other schools, the announcer at the St. Joseph’s Convent athletics announces the availability of the programmes and encourages fans to purchase; but unlike the other schools and INTERCOL, the announcer calls out the results of each event and repeats at least once in clear and distinct English. Everyone who wants to record has the time to record. Congratulations Convent.
Of course, this would not have been possible if the Games Officials were lapsing. All throughout the proceedings the events flowed smoothly such that there was no need to cancel any event in the interest of time. The final of thirty-five events for the day – the 4x400 relay, ended at 5. 40 p.m. and the full results of the sports were given before six o’clock. From beginning to end there was only one voice at the announcer’s booth. There were no assistants, no backups nor shift systems. The one voice maintained its freshness and its clarity for the entire sports meet.
INTERCOL, the biggest and greatest athletic event in the nation, is just around the corner. Year after year, the announcers at the booth create chaos over things and probably show themselves up as foolish as well. Year after year enthusiastic fans purchase programmes but are unable to do the fillings. This is certainly not a problem with the Games Officials since the events are completed and the results are handed in. It is therefore reasonable to conclude, therefore, that the tardiness and callousness rest within the territory of the announcer’s booth.
At this time an appeal goes out to the organizers, and particularly to the announcers at the booth of INTERCOL 2008. There is sufficient time, before the great two days, to take a few pages from Convent’s book and to get things right. Find out from Convent how they do it. Fans do not just buy programmes because they have a spare five dollars; they would like to write in the results.
Not for too long the announcer at Convent sports had to ask intruders to clear the tracks for the resumption of proceedings after the afternoon break and March Pass. The authoritative voice spoke with authority and the response was prompt. In fact, when the naked eyes surveyed the tracks, the temptation otherwise would have been to proceed because the distractions were minimal. However, typical of Convent, nothing less than the highest level of decorum is accepted. Congratulations Convent.
Too frequently there are great lessons, good examples and clear models to be had; yet, those who should be taking note and learning are not doing so. It is hoped that the other Secondary Schools and INTERCOL organizers would recognize the wisdom in announcing the results with clarity and repetition so that the fans can have some value for their programmes.
